Overuse injuries have become prevalent among young athletes who participate in organized sports. Fitness professionals can have an impactful role in coaching and educating these individuals and their parents on the potential hazards of overtraining and strategies for injury resistance. This presentation will discuss the latest evidence on overuse injuries including prevention, injury recognition, and management as it applies to the fitness professional.

1. Identify common overuse injuries, causative factors, and physiological effects on young athletes.

2. Recognize and apply the latest research evidence on overuse injury prevention strategies for young athletes.

3. Reflect on the role of the fitness professional and their scope of practice when working with these individuals     

About  your host, Scott W. Cheatham, Ph.D. DPT, ATC, CSCS 
Scott Cheatham is a Full Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Kinesiology at CSU Dominguez Hills in Carson, California, and the owner of SportsPhysioRX, a concierge sports and orthopedic physical therapy company. He holds both a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and a Ph.D. in Physical Therapy and is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), certified ergonomic specialist, and holder of multiple fitness certifications. He is a national presenter and has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, conference and seminar presentations, and home study courses focused on sports medicine, orthopedics, and health and fitness. A member of the editorial board for the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, he also works as an education and research consultant for various health and fitness organizations and has a clinical practice emphasizing sports medicine, orthopedics, and sports-performance training.
